Camping Domaine Les Ranchisses

Some people probably only know the Ardèche because of its white-water rivers, such as the Ardèche, Beaume or Chassezac. But besides the possibility of canoeing or rafting, the region has much more to offer. On the one hand, there are the rivers with their wild gorges and limestone cliffs, and on the other hand, there are the lonely mountains of the Ardèche. The landscape is characterised by centuries-old and now mostly overgrown terraced chestnut forests and orchards, barren mountain ranges, many small rivers and streams, fortress-like villages and farmsteads built of quarry stone. There is so much original France to discover here that many return again and again. Besides water sports, the area is a true Eldorado for hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers.

You can stay at the 5-star Camping Les Ranchisses. The small but very modern site is located on the small river Ligne in the middle of the beautiful landscape. After a beautiful day in nature, the wellness area with sauna, steam bath and whirlpool is the first place to go to relax. The beautifully designed bathing area with its various pools is also very nice and reminds one a little of a Roman bath. The French restaurant at Les Ranchisses serves delicious regional cuisine.

Great for kids, excellent entertainment, pool up for some maintenance

Location: beautiful. Close to the Ardèche river. Mobile home: good, very clean on arrival. Missed hooks, only 4 in the shower for towels whereas home is for 6? No hooks for dishcloths or coats. Homes are very close to one another compared to another camping we went to. Pool: needs maintenance/a go...show more

There is no hedging between each pitch which is quite unusual in France - and actually one of the main things we love about how the French ‘do’ campsites. The lack of hedging made the pitches feel open and exposed, with not a huge amount of space between you and your neighbours. We had booked a comfort pitch so had a larger area than normal, and positioned our caravan facing the river (back to the road) so were fortunate in this respect. Facilities - are spacious and clean, and we never had to wait to use anything. I was surprised at the lack of hand soap; lots of wash basins but only one sink with a soap dispenser for the entire block. I thought there would be more available during the pandemic. Mobile homes - can’t comment on the inside, but our opinion was that they were very close together and offered very little outside space other than car parking. Bar/shop - both great! Plenty of necessities in the small shop and a wonderful bakery. Perfect for your daily baguette and breakfast pastries. The bar serves a limited snack menu - waffles are delicious! Staff - are always friendly, helpful and all seemed to speak at least two languages. Activities- there is plenty on offer. Our two boys (11 and 13) didn’t join in with too much but they enjoyed the water polo and swimming pool games. We all toon part in the colour run which was great fun and very well organised. The activity staff were very present and always around to entertain the children; even with board games in the bar in the evening. They work very hard! Younger children in the kids club looked very content and happy! Lauberge Restaurant - ate here a few times and always enjoyed it. Very busy, so book in advance! They offer a brilliant takeaway menu. Pool - quieter in the morning; very busy in the afternoons. Always managed to get a sunbed so plenty of space but does feel crowded when busy. Adult pool is a nice bonus! Area - Largentière is a nice looking medieval town, but not much going on other than the weekly market. If you’re prepared to travel, there is lots to do in the surrounding rivers and forests - hire a canoe and spend the day in the river. Ardèche/Pont du Arc is very busy so try some of the other local rivers instead for a more peaceful experience. Overall, it is a good campsite, but I don’t think it was for us unfortunately. Having stayed at other five star campsites in France, this doesn’t compare to some we have stayed at. I would say it is more 4*. On the verge of being similar to a Eurocamp type site, which does suit some but not us. We were a little surprised at the lack of COVID precautions in place - but this may be because French guidance is different to the UK. Other than bar stools being out of use, hand gel in the shop/bar, and the requirement to wear a mask in the shop and bar just while ordering, there are no other restrictions. Sunbeds, tables, etc are all close together as usual and children’s activities are not spaced out and include lots of social interaction/touching without distancing (ie, football, touch rugby, disco). I would recommend if you have children under 10 - fab facilities and clubs/activities. We had a nice holiday, but don’t think the site will entice us back. Note - be careful of all the kids on bikes/scooters bombing around. Nearly got taken out several times walking around the site!

First, the one improvement needed-the really large pool area has @ 140 sun loungers but only 11 fixed thatched sun shades and the adult only pool has no shade whatsoever.
